29-Year-Old Man Dies While In Police Custody

SAN BERNARDINO – A 29-year-old man struggling with police after being ineffectively tasered died while in police custody on Tuesday morning.
Jonathan White, a San Bernardino resident, was creating a disturbance at a board and care facility in the 1100 block of East 26th St., said police reports. He died a little over one hour later at a nearby hospital, but no cause of death has yet been released.

White was at the facility, which was managed by his mother, and was reportedly yelling and threatening residents at the site. When officers arrived at 9:06 a.m., they tried to take him into custody for mental evaluation, said Lt. Gwendolyn Waters.
His mother, Janice White, told police her son had a bipolar disorder and was schizophrenic.
White resisted and fought with the officers, who tried to control him with a stun gun and pepper spray, neither of which worked. Other officers came to help subdue him through a continuous struggle, during which three officers were injured.
“The three officers were treated and released for minor injuries,” said Waters, who also said no one else was injured.
“I have not heard anything about his being upset over treatment of his mother … the manager on the board-and-care, not a client,” said Waters.
Police reports that the officers never struck White during the struggle, but the violence over the struggle required the presence of medical aid services. While the paramedics were examining White, he stopped breathing. After White was taken to St. Bernardine’s Medical Center, he was pronounced dead at 10:10 a.m., the cause of death being investigated by the county coroner’s office.
