SAN BERNARDINO – A drive-by shooting took the life of a toddler while two other shootings left a total of five wounded early Monday night.
A three-year-old girl died at St. Bernardine Medical Center after being shot outside a home in the 1300 block of D Street, according to police. A 22-year-old pregnant woman and another three-year-old girl toddler, also shot in the attack, were critically wounded.
The toddlers were taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center (LLUMC) and the pregnant woman was taken to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in nearby Colton. The condition of the woman and the other child still unknown.
The three-year-old girl was declared dead at LLUMC.
Homicide detectives were not able to determine any motive for the shooting of the toddlers and pregnant woman, which took place at 7:45 p.m. There were no suspects, said Lt. David Harp. However, Police said the area is well known for gang and drug activity.
“We’re not putting out any description of the suspect yet,” said Lt. Gwendolyn Waters, “and that includes race, anything, because we don’t want the public to start honing in on people. We have so many witnesses to interview.”
Lt. Waters said the victims were just sitting on the front porch when a male suspect walked up and started firing from the street. “That’s where the shell casings were found,” she said. “The suspect knew he was shooting at a pregnant woman.”
Just before 6 p.m., police received another report of shots fired in the 100 block of Olive, east of Sierra Way. When officers arrived, they found a man had been shot as he drove through the area. Passengers in the car drove him to St. Bernardine Medical Center where he was stabilized and transferred to Loma Linda University Medical Center.
While investigators were piecing together information on that shooting, another man showed up at the emergency room. Harp said that man might have been connected to the shooting, but investigators were still working on details.
Another shooting occurred at Foothill Blvd. and Meridian Ave. at 5:50 p.m. Police said a car drove up, a man got out and fired several shots at a man standing in front of a store. After the victim was struck once, the shooter got back into the car, occupied by others, and sped away.
That victim was taken to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, police said, and was expected to recover. “He was shot in the upper body,” said Harp on Monday night, describing his condition and “serious, but stable.”
Police did not identify any of the victims.
In the toddler shooting, witnesses told police that children were playing outside when shot were fired. Police were told that eight gunshots were heard, along with screaming, while some of the family was sitting on the porch.
The woman was five months pregnant, said police. A neighbor had driven the victims to get medical attention.
“The shootings are not related,” said Waters, adding that the other two shootings “are nothing unique for this city.”
The location of the D Street shooting is just six blocks from San Bernardino police headquarters, “which is just up the street from us,” said Waters.
She said the pregnant woman was not the mother of both toddlers. “She was the mother of the toddler who survived,” said Waters.
All three shootings took place in a two-hour span.
