Alert residents aid police in Milpitas burglary arrests

Alert Milpitas residents assisted police in the arrests of a group of robbery suspects Monday afternoon.

According to Milpitas officials, a resident called police just before 12:30 p.m. to report a suspicious vehicle driving through the neighborhood. The car reportedly matched the description of a suspect vehicle involved in a residential burglary.

Officers arrived within minutes and stopped the 2006 Range Rover in the area of Tassara and North Hillview drives. The car’s two occupants were arrested and a third was taken into custody a short distance away, authorities say.

While the three suspects were being interviewed, another resident called to report a prowler in his yard in the 800 block of Tramway Drive. Police quickly responded to the call and arrested a fourth suspect connected to the burglaries following a brief neighborhood search and pursuit.

A third resident notified police that his home in the 700 block of Canada Drive had been burglarized during the time the suspects were on the loose, police say.

Police have identified the suspects as Oakland residents Shawn Hampton, Jr., Jacque Copprue, Diamond Hall, and Lonnie Gedtry. They are facing a litany of charges including prowling, conspiracy, and burglary. At least one of the suspects was on parole and another had an outstanding warrant for his arrest, according to authorities.

Milpitas Police Chief Dennis Graham is crediting the vigilance of the residents as the reason for the arrests and urged all Milpitas residents to remain alert and report any suspicious activity to police.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to contact Milpitas police at (408) 586-2400.
