SACRAMENTO – A landlord made a startling discovery while investigating his Ceres rental property Monday.

Ceres police Sgt. Jose Berber said the landlord of the auto body shop notified police of what he found just after 3 p.m. He told police he had entered the building on the 1800 block of East Whitmore Avenue because he believed his tenant had vacated the shop. Once inside, he found what appeared to be a body in a freezer.

Responding officers secured the area and obtained a warrant for crime scene investigators to search the premises.

The remains were subsequently taken to the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office for further examination, according to Berber.

Berber said the gender of the body and a cause of death had yet to be determined.
