BAKER – Highway Patrol officers arrested a Barstow man for attacking his niece, chasing him from one high desert community to another along Interstate 15 on Tuesday, using spike strips to stop him while he was driving a stolen vehicle.
Reports are the suspect, Michael Satterfield, 38, of Barstow, was high on methamphetamine and cocaine when he was arrested for attacking his 11-year-old nice. He is expected to be arraigned in a Barstow courtroom today.
Barstow police had responded to reports of a child being attacked at 213 Woodham Ave. at 7:34 a.m. According to police reports, the girl told her father that Satterfield attacked her in her bedroom the night before. Reports are that he held her and struck her several times in the face and head.
The girl bit Satterfield, who eventually fled from the home and went to his sister’s home in nearby Fort Irwin, according to police reports. Police said the suspect left some evidence that was about to abduct his niece.
Upon learning he was being sought by police, Satterfield stole his sister’s car and fled again. Barstow police notified area law enforcement agencies, giving a description of the car he was driving.
CHP officers sighted Satterfield driving northbound on I-15 and attempted to stop him, finally using a spike strip, and eventually arresting him about 25 miles north of Baker at 10:30 a.m., according to Sgt. Andrew Espinoza, Sr. of the Barstow Police Dept.
Espinoza said Satterfield admitted to officers he had been using methamphetamine and cocaine. He was arrested on suspicion of attempted kidnapping, battery likely to produce serious injury, and residential burglary.
Police did not say what evidence led them to believe Satterfield was trying to abduct his niece.
Held on $125,000 bail, Satterfield, who resides at 1250 West Buena Vista St. in Barstow, was being held at the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga.
The chase that led eventually led police to Satterfield took over 80 miles from a stretch that led from Barstow to some 25 miles past Baker, considered a remote spot in the desert community that is en route to Las Vegas, Nev.
