Detectives investigating sexual assault at Subway restaurant on Auburn Boulevard

Sacramento County Sheriff’s detectives are investigating what they describe as the random sexual assault of a woman as she arrived to work at a Subway restaurant in Foothill Farms early Tuesday morning.

The employee was “violently beaten” and tied up at the sandwich shop – located 5440 Auburn Blvd., near Garfield Avenue – after she arrived to work around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, said sheriff’s Sgt. Lisa Bowman. The woman, who is in her early to mid-20s, told investigators she also was sexually assaulted.

The employee was able to free herself and call for help about 8:30 a.m., roughly two hours after the attack began, Bowman said. It’s unclear how long the attack lasted, and how long the assailant stayed in the store before fleeing, she said.

When help arrived, the victim was transported to the hospital. Sexual assault detectives responded to the crime scene and the hospital but were not initially able to get much information, Bowman said. Detectives know only that the suspect was wearing all black clothing and a mask. They are not sure yet how he entered the store.

Bowman described the victim’s physical injuries as “significant.”

Bowman said detectives did not have enough information Tuesday to determine whether the attack is connected to a series of rapes in the area of Interstate 80 and Madison Avenue. Three women were assaulted in attacks at 4:20 a.m. Sept. 19; 9:15 p.m. Dec. 10; and 4:30 a.m. Jan. 8. That suspect was described as a clean-shaven black man 20-to-40 years old, with a shaved head or short “afro-style” haircut. He had a large build and wore rectangular-shaped glasses. In the January attack, he was driving a red, older model, box-type vehicle with 4 doors.
