“Electronic Escapee” Caught

The difficulties of being on parole or probation occasionally manifest themselves in high levels of frustration for the individual being routinely monitored by law enforcement agencies.  For some, that frustration may not be mitigated simply because the terms of their release from their incarcerated status excuse them from daily in-person probation appearances but require them to wear a GPS tracking device monitoring their every move throughout the community.

Manuel Aceves

That frustration apparently reached an “action threshhold” for Manuel Brian Aceves, 40, a couple weeks ago when, according to Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department Public Information Officer Kelly Hoover, he “cut off his electronic monitoring device two weeks ago.”  When it became apparent to authorities that Aceves was no longer wearing the GPS unit provided to him, a warrant for his arrest was issued.

When on July 17th Sheriff’s deputies became aware of his location in an industrial area within the city, contact with Aceves was attempted.  But Aceves did not reciprocate the deputies’ interest in getting together, and he promptly made an attempt to flee, leading to a vigorous foot pursuit that involved officers from the Santa Barbara Police Department—one of whom suffered minor injuries as a result of the strenuous effort required–as well as SBSD deputies.

A short time later, Aceves was located hiding in a nearby commercial building and was immediately taken into custody.  According to Hoover, Aceves was charged with felony vandalism because the GPS unit in question “was never found”, as well as felony evading and delaying arrest, due to the SBPD officer sustaining unspecified minor injuries.
