Girl Killed, Woman Injured After Shooting In South L.A., Sheriff’s Dept. Says

A girl was fatally shot and a woman was injured after gunfire erupted in South L.A. Thursday night, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.

The shooting was reported just after 9 p.m. near 93rd Street and Hooper Avenue, in the Florence-Firestone neighborhood of South L.A., according to a sheriff’s news release.

The victim, identified only as a female juvenile died at the scene, the release stated.

A second shooting victim was taken to a hospital in unknown condition. Another woman described as a victim wasn’t hit by gunfire, and it was unclear whether she was injured.

The information came from the Sheriff’s Department hours after the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed a shooting in the exact same area around the same time, but LAPD said the two shooting victims were discovered after a short pursuit ended in a crash.

LAPD Officer Tony Im told KTLA that two people who had been shot jumped into a car, which then took off at a high rate of speed and prompted police to initiate a pursuit.

The chase ended when the vehicle crashed at Imperial Highway and Wilmington Avenue, in the Willowbrook area, he said. When officers checked on the vehicle, they found two people with gunshot wounds, Im said.

One was a woman who was unconscious and not breathing, according to the officer. He didn’t have any information on a second victim, saying only that one person was taken to a hospital.

Sky5 aerial video over the scene showed a white sheet covering what appeared to be a body in the front passenger seat of an SUV. Im did not immediately confirm, however, whether the double shooting was fatal.

Although police said the vehicle had crashed, there didn’t appear to be signs of damage on the SUV, and no other civilian cars could be seen in the immediate vicinity, according to the footage.

No information or description of a suspect or suspects was immediately provided by either agency.

One person was escorted into an awaiting patrol car after speaking with police, the aerial video showed. The individual was not in handcuffs, and it was not known if he was connected to the incident.

No additional details were immediately released.
