CHULA VISTA — A toddler taken out by the grandfather late Friday night was later found by a skateboarder on a Chula Vista sidewalk, said Chula Vista police.

About 11:30 p.m., a skateboarder on Quintard Street near Second Avenue came across a stroller on the sidewalk with a 2-year-old child asleep inside. When officers responded they found the child appeared to be well cared for and had no signs of abuse, but the parents could not be located so the child was taken into protective custody.

About 2:40 a.m., police said the 17-year-old mother called and was hysterical that her child was missing.

Police found that the child’s 53-year-old grandfather had taken the child out at 10 p.m. to a local taco shop to get a burrito. He was unaware of the location of the child and appeared to be under the influence of drugs, police said.

Officers took the grandfather into custody on suspicion of child neglect and being under the influence.
