Intoxicated dad crashed minivan into trees, killing his 1-year-old daughter, cops say

A 1-year-old girl is dead and her father is charged with vehicular homicide following a Wednesday afternoon crash on Route 55 in Gloucester County.

The dad, Leroy M. Iglesia, 34, of Blackwood, was intoxicated, police said. Elowen Iglesia, of Williamstown, died of her injuries in the crash, police said.

Iglesia was driving southbound on Route 55 near milepost 52.8 in Mantua Township just after 2 p.m. when his minivan ran off the right side of the road and struck two trees, according to New Jersey State Police.

The vehicle careened back onto the road and came to rest in the middle of the highway.

Authorities said it’s not clear if Elowen was properly restrained in a child safety seat at the time, police said. The investigation is ongoing.

Iglesia is charged with strict liability reckless vehicular homicide, vehicular homicide, crash with a fatality while driving while suspended, endangering the welfare of a child and driving while intoxicated.

He was also charged with possession of crack cocaine and heroin.

Iglesia was placed in Salem County Correctional Facility pending a detention hearing.

The roadway was closed for five hours as a result of the crash.
