A man was hospitalized in stable condition following a shootout with police who approached a group of people in the Vermont Vista neighborhood of South Los Angeles late Sunday.
Gang enforcement officers approached a large group of people in front of a home near the intersection of West 99th Street and South Figueroa Street about 10:20 p.m., Los Angeles Police Department Sgt. Barry Montgomery said.
Believing there were several gang members in the group, the officers decided to investigate, Montgomery said.
As they approached, one of the people in the group fired at the officers and “an officer-involved shooting occurred,” Montgomery said.
None of the officers were struck but the man suspected of shooting at them was, Montgomery said.
The man was taken into custody, then transported to a local hospital in stable condition, Montgomery said.
Authorities used a Metro bus to detain about 30 people during their investigation.
Police were also checking nearby homes for others who fled following the shooting, Montgomery said.
