INDIO – After firing on two officers after being approached, a suspect was booked on several felony accounts including attempted murder.
During a routine patrol on November 29 at 8:00 AM, an Indio police officer stopped his vehicle to approach an individual matching the description of wanted robbery suspect. The officer was patrolling Indio along Highway 111 at Madison. The adult male, who matched the description of the suspect in question, was walking down the street. When the Indio police officer attempted to stop and detain him, the suspect continued to evade him.
Another officer arrived at the scene and at this time, the suspect revealed a handgun which he brandished and then fired on both officers. Reacting to being shot at, the first officer fired back and struck the suspect. The suspect was then transported to a local hospital to be treated for his injury and was identified as Eddie Joseph Rivera, a 32 year-old Indio resident. Neither the officers nor any members of the public were harmed in the shooting.
The suspect’s injuries were not life threatening and he was treated and released for transport to the jail in Indio. Upon arriving, Rivera was booked on two counts of attempted murder of a peace officer, one count of violent felon with a firearm and violation of parole. The case is currently active and further investigation on Rivera ongoing. At this time, the Indio Police Department is not releasing the names of the officers involved in the incident.
