Suspected burglars sunk at Auburn pool store

AUBURN, Calif. — Two Orangevale men probably experienced a sinking feeling during Sunday morning’s attempted burglary of an Auburn-area pool and spa store.

According to the Placer County Sheriff’s Office, a burglar alarm was activated as Timothy F. Gault and Derek K. Berset were removing items from the Lincoln Way business.

Responding deputies apprehended the 28-year old Gault inside the store, but the 27-year old Berset managed to ellude capture for awhile.

Berset was taken into custody a short time later when he reportedly returned to the scene of the crime.

The incident report says Berset had returned, possibly on a stolen bike, to retrieve his passport and identification which he had deposited nearby before the alleged crime.

According to that report, a number of items allegedly stolen from the store were discovered nearby.

The two, who both reported their addresses as 8465 Old Ranch Road, Orangevale, were booked at the Placer County Jail. They face charges of burglary, conspiracy, resisting arrest and possession of burglary tools.

Gault was released on $10,000 bail, while Berset remains jailed in lieu of $52,500 bail. Berset is also being held on an El Dorado County burglary warrant, and a Placer County warrant charging driving on a suspended license and possession of marijuana.
