A 14-year-old is in custody after fatally shooting his sister’s boyfriend with a shotgun at a house party in Katy, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said.

The suspect’s sister, 18, was also shot but is expected to survive after she was taken to the hospital, officials said.

Authorities say that the boyfriend, 20, was pronounced dead on the scene, and the suspect’s sister was hospitalized after being shot in the upper torso or neck. The shooting occurred just before midnight at a party at the 24000 block of Pepperell Place in Katy.

Authorities detained the juvenile suspect on the scene for questioning. About 10 to 12 people were inside the house when the violence erupted, according to Harris County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Eric Clegg. The motive is unclear.

“It’s really unclear at this point,” Clegg said. “It could be a girlfriend-boyfriend deal.”

Gonzalez tweeted about the incident, describing it as “a house party gone bad.”
